What Is Truth? | Understanding The Gospel

Defining Truth

Our world is driven by truth. We all desire to know what to do, how to live, and experience the best of life.

The sad reality is that truth is always changing. Our laws and standards of society are evolving. And people are constantly trying to define the lines between humility, arrogance, success, and failure.

But what is the Lord’s definition of truth? How can we apply His truth to our everyday lives?

Jesus Is The King

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.”
John 18:37-38

Jesus is the King. He is the Author of Life and the Ruler of Heaven and Earth. As King, He owns everything and everyone in creation. Jesus can do anything and if we follow Him, we can receive His help.

Jesus Cleanses The Leper

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.

2 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
Matthew 8:1-3

A leper knelt before Jesus and asked to be made clean. Here, the man addresses Jesus as Lord and acknowledges that He can choose to help Him. Jesus in response, heals the man immediately and commands him to offer a gift to the priest.

Jesus Heals The Blind Man

35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.

36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.

37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”

43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
Luke 18:35-38; 42-43

While Jesus is traveling to Jericho, a blind called out to him saying “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”. This man also addressed Jesus as the King and acknowledged His choice of helping him. Jesus speaks with the man, restores his sight, and tells him that his faith has made him well.

Jesus Teaches About Greed

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?”

15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
Luke 12:13-15

A man called out Jesus in a crowd and asked “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” This man doesn’t address Jesus as King and His choice in helping him. In response, Jesus doesn’t fulfill the request but teaches the man about greed.

Jesus is the King. And understanding his character and position is the foundation of learning the truth.

Jesus Came To Deliver The Truth

In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.
John 18:37

Since the beginning of His ministry, Jesus preached about the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven is more than a physical place. It’s an environment where we can experience God’s love, peace, and freedom. We receive the Kingdom of Heaven through repentance which involves leaving behind our lives and following God.

The Conversion Of Saul

On his way to persecute Christians in Damascus, Saul experiences a life-changing vision of Jesus. Jesus tells Saul that He’s persecuting his people and commands Him to wait in the city for further instructions. At that moment, Saul, the man that dedicated his life to destroying the Gospel became someone that would give everything to spread it.

Jesus Offers Us The Truth

Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.
John 18:37

Jesus tells us that everyone who desires to know the truth listens to Him. Listening here refers to hearing and understanding His words. From this place, we can apply His word and principles to our lives and experience the truth he wants us to have.

God desired this for humanity in the Garden of Eden. In the Garden, there was no depression, anxiety, or sickness. And people lived together in harmony. Although we lost this life during the fall, Jesus restored our privileges by dying on the cross.

Today, Jesus offers us all the opportunity to live in truth. We can do this by acknowledging Him as our King and following His guidance.
